Fire Ban - May 31 2021

posted May 31, 2021, 6:41 PM by Van koughnet   [ updated May 31, 2021, 6:43 PM ]

From one extreme to the next. After years of significant spring flooding we have had one of the lowest amounts of rain fall in years, which has led to record low spring water levels and now an early season fire ban. Vankoughnet is surrounded by an amazing forested landscape. Let's help keep it that way.

Flood Watch 2021

Flood Watch 2021

This post marks the start of the 2021 Vankoughnet Flood Watch.  We have been tracking the spring water levels of the Black River since the "Great Flood" of 2013 and hope we never see flooding as bad as that again.

This is year 2 of the CoVid19 Virus. Once again it appears that this years flooding is on track to be not so bad.   We certainly don't need any more challenges this year.

Over the next few weeks "we" will do our best to post river level updates, photos and videos.  You can also follow the story on Facebook and Twitter.   Just click on either in this article to go to the corresponding pages.

March 25th, 2021:

Beginning of Ice out recorded.

Fortunately no flooding to report yet. There is a lot of rain forecast over the next 48 hiours. The river has started to rise, but with cool temperatures, it's not looking to dangerous.

March 26th, 2021:
The following statistics show the distance from the river height to the driving surface of McCutcheon Bridge. The lower the number equals the higher the water level.

Water level measured at 6ft-6in. Below road (deck) level of the McCutchen bridge at 11am this morning. The lower the number the higher the water. Stay tuned for more updates.

March 27th, 2021:
Water level rose slightly in the last 24 hours. 2 munches. From 6ft 6in to 6ft 4in from bridge deck. Should see a faster increase tomorrow, after today's rains. Pictures and video available on Facebook and Instagram.

Blazing fast internet could be on the Horizon

Dear Vankoughnet Residents. We have all struggled with poor internet service. However, hope is literally on the horizon! Starlink has created actual high-speed satellite internet (non-geostationary low-orbiting) and is trying to provide services in Canada to areas that have poor/no high-speed. There is currently an online petition for the CRTC to grant SpaceX's license for Starlink in Canada. If you are interested in supporting the initiative, here is a link to the petition: https://www.change.org/p/grant-spacex-s-licence-for-starlink-in-canada-accordez-%C3%A0-spacex-la-licence-pour-starlink-au-canada
FYI: This is not a paid advertisement. The information comes from a fellow community member who just wanted to share the information. You can also learn more about this and Starlink by simply doing a web search.

April 1st 2020:

How fitting is the this! The first 2020 flood watch post on April fools day!!!

It appears we are on track for a very mild flood year, but it sure has been unusual in other ways. Very minimal snow pack this year and the ice left the river at least 3 weeks sooner than last year and perhaps sooner than it ever has. Looks like we might get an early spring....or more weird weather.....or both. :)

Of course we have to mention that it's the CoVid19 spring. Hopefully we don't have severe flooding on top of this already unprecedented natural disaster.

Due to some technical difficulties, we can't upload any photos or video at the moment, but you can find pics and video if you like and follow us on Facebook or instagram. Lots of ways to follow us listed at the top of the page.

Fortunately no flooding to report yet. There was a lot of rain over the past weekend and the river started to rise about a foot per day, but with cool temperatures and no precipitation in the forecast, it's not looking to dangerous.

The following statistics show the distance from the river height to the driving surface of McCutcheon Bridge. The lower the number equals the higher the water level.

March 28th. 11 a.m.     8 ft 5 in
March 29th 7 p.m.       7 ft 7 in
March 30th 11 a.m.     6 ft 7 in
April 1st 12:30 p.m.     5 ft 9 in.
